'Jeweled-Crown Maitreya Bodhisattva' (Miroku Bosatsu). 7th century. Koryuji, Kyoto
Yoshifumi Ueda (1905 - 1993) was a highly regarded and influential Shin Buddhist scholar. From 1978 - 1993, he was the inaugural General Editor of the Hongwanji International Center's project to translate the complete works of Shinran. He was responsible for setting the patterns of style for the project, and contributed to the introductions and glossaries.
This essay addresses some well-known passages from the Tanni Sho and the Shozomatsu Wasan, which concern value judgements. In these passages, Shinran attests to the absolute limitations of human discernment in the face of the unconditional compassion of Amida Buddha.
This essay is an exploration of the core meaning of shinjin. The writer especially emphasises the kind of impact that wisdom and compassion might be expected to have when shinjin is experienced by the Pure Land aspirant.
Who is Shinran? is not simply about the historical Japanese person who was born in 1172 and died in 1262. Rather, it explores the source of boundless life that flowed from Shinran's personality and the wisdom and compassion that he realized through the Nembutsu.
